About this Series

I am fascinated by Jungian psychology. A foundational concept is the psychological mechanism called “projection”. According to Carl Jung, projection is an unconscious process where I dump my inner thoughts and feelings onto someone or something else outside of me. Because it is unconscious, I am completely unaware of it happening. Yet, according to Jung, it is happening all the time, irregardless of my consent. It results in the following: what I perceive in real time is, in actuality, only a reflection of my past experiences and how I have processed them. In other words, I bring all my baggage to the table, and have no choice is doing so. This is both terrifying and interesting news. I choose to exercise the only control I have over this process by responding to it with this collection of works.

The pieces in this collection are my visual interpretation of the Projection process. The painted compositions sit before the viewer as a neutral stimulus. They carry no inherent meaning within themselves. But we, as humans, are a meaning-making species, and, we cannot live in a meaningless world. So, given a few moments, the viewer begins to form their own perceptions of the abstract compositions. Echoing the Rorschach inkblot test, they may even begin to analyze their own perceptions. The mirror serves as a cheeky reminder to the viewer that the meaning they find is a result of nothing more than from what comes from within. The blocks themselves obscure the full reflection of the viewer, suggesting the blindspots of our own unconscious.
